Home Extensions

Extending our home is something that we think about and plan for years in advance.  And you’ll have heard horror stories about the reality of having building work carried out whilst living in amongst it all. But it really doesn’t have to be like that.  Here are our four simple steps that will ease you into extending your home.

Everybody needs good neighbours

This is very important!  At least 1 in 10 people move because they don’t get along with their neighbours!  If you are thinking about extending, take your neighbours into account. They will appreciate early consultation and will be more amenable to the inevitable noise and dust that is likely to be generated.  And of course, if you need them onside for party wall or planning discussions – the better you get along, the more likely you are to achieve your desired result with them.

Do you need to avoid traffic?

It’s important to think about how you’re going to use the added space and the flow of ‘traffic’ (that’s you!) through the house. Why do you want your loft conversion, garage conversion or side-return extension? Is to create an extra bedroom, a guest room, a man or woman cave? You may find that a bedroom in a converted garage doesn’t quite work for you. Or a mancave upstairs in the converted attic becomes an unused space because you have to walk up three flights of stairs to get there.  Conversely, if you’re adding space to create a library, for example, you’ll welcome a space that is tucked away somewhere quiet.

Keep it real.

Know your home. Does it face south and get lots of light throughout the year? Or is it north-facing with limited light? Or perhaps somewhere in between? If your home is north-facing, then the wonderfully bright sun-room you’re looking for is going to be something of a struggle and will require expert help. Be realistic about what is achievable.  You don’t want to spend money on a beautiful extension if the result isn’t exactly what you wanted.

Talk to someone who’s been there.

Has a neighbour or friend had an extension to their property? Talk to them about the nitty gritty.  Noise. Dust. The need to move out temporarily. Cooking without a kitchen. Showering without a shower…and so on.  Most of these things only last for a day or two, if at all, but it’s important to plan for them. You may find that you alter the time of year that you instruct your builder to begin or decide to move out for a few days.  Forarmed is forwarned!

It’s not all doom and gloom. If you have a clear plan, extending your home can be a thing of joy, rather than a bad experience that many do suffer.  A good building contractor will guide you through the process of the build, tell you what to expect and when and help you plan for the very best, and the most dusty of days.
