Patios and Decking: We’ve been super busy here in Swansea at KH Carpentry & Building this summer, with many requests for the construction of patios and outside space. And it’s no wonder – the weather has been glorious!
One of the biggest conundrums our clients have to navigate is whether to opt for a patio or decking, and there are pros and cons to both. Here they are:
A patio will have a long life span, when it’s down, it’s down for good if you so wish! And in addition to this, it won’t need annual maintenance. So it’s a no-hassle option.
When laid, and laid well, a patio will create a fantastic outdoor living space and will add value to your home. With a barbeque or hot-tub figures suggest that this can be up to £10,000!
If you want to create an area that can house your caravan or hot tub, a patio area will be able to do this, thanks to well laid foundations.
Laying a patio is a skilled job and takes time to plan and lay. The foundations need to be appropriate to the required use and depending on the size and required look, may even require design assistance.
The costs of laying a new patio may incur a reasonable cost at the outset, however this is likely to ultimately be recouped in the value of the house.
Decking has a very specific look and if it’s this that you’re looking for, you are onto a winner. It’s also warm and dry to walk on which is always pleasurable.
If you would like a balcony or raised viewing platform – decking is ideal. It can be built on stilts or on a platform above the ground at the desired height.
Because of it’s nature, decking is relatively inexpensive and quick to install and so if you are looking for a ‘quick fix’, can provide the ideal solution.
In maintenance terms, when it comes to decking the only word we’d use is ‘high’! It can be prone to rot and so will require treatment every year with a total life expectancy of around 7 – 10 years.
It’s said that at any given time in the UK, you are likely to be just feet away from a rat – and this is also true where decking is involved. Decking makes perfect thoroughfare for these private creatures – which may be a no-no for many home owners.
As you can see, there are pros and cons to both decking and patios. If you have outside space that you’d like to transform into a useful part of your home, please contact us by email, or call us and we’ll work with you to create the perfect outside space.
